Power Factor Correction and Reactive Power Compensation
Power Factor Correction(PFC) is done by electricity consumers to avoid penalties on account of large KVA demand or lower power factor. Normally, such penalties are imposed on industrial consumers. Therefore, industries need more lagging KVAr due to induction motors or otherwise, install capacitors banks or Static Var Generator(SVG) for power factor correction. And here SVG can correct both inductive and capacitive power,bi-directionally.
Reactive Power Compensation is done by power system utilities (power transmission companies) to maintain system voltages at required levels and also to enhance power carrying capacity.In reactive power compensation of transmission lines, compensation is done both ways. When voltages are low, capacitor banks or Static Var Generator(SVG,Statcom) are used to compensate for line inductive drop. When voltages are high, Reactors or SVG,Statcom are used to compensate for line capacitance.
With the power factor deteriorates, more reactive power is drawn from the power grid. This causes a voltage drop, if the reactive power generated is not increased. Reactive power demand is closely linked with the voltage of the system. Therefore to minimize voltage dip in the networks, suitable reactive power compenstion system such as Static Var Generator, Capacitor banks should be installed. Increasing the excitation of the alternator also generates reactive power, but it is not generally preferred because it is not economical to transmit reactive power from the generation end to the load end. Reactive power is supplied locally near the load end where reactive power is required.
Althought reactive power doesn't deliver anything, after installation of Static Var Generator or Capacitor banks, the Reactive power(kVAr) will be lower, the power factor will be improved, the Required Apperant Power(kVA) will be lower, the electricity bills will be lower without PF penalties.
