Analysis of Harmonic Source Localization Technology and Direction Determination Methods
As a leader in power quality solutions, YT Electric has long been committed to research on harmonic mitigation in power systems. This article analyzes core technical principles of harmonic source localization through a representative case study.
Case Background: Harmonic Mitigation Example
A power system maintained normal voltage distortion levels when harmonic filters were connected before 11:00. After filter disconnection at 11:00 due to a fault, significant voltage harmonic distortion was observed. This case clearly demonstrates the critical role of harmonic suppression equipment in power quality management.
Dual-Method Approach for Harmonic Source Identification
Method 1: Voltage-Current Harmonic Correlation Analysis
This technique compares phase relationships between current harmonics and voltage harmonics through time-domain waveform and spectrum analysis. Significant correlation indicates downstream harmonic sources, where load-side harmonic currents cause system voltage distortion.
Method 2: Harmonic Power Flow Direction Determination (Recommended)
This advanced method determines harmonic origins by calculating active power direction at each harmonic frequency:
- Positive power direction (+P): Harmonic energy flows from grid to load (upstream source)
- Negative power direction (-P): Harmonic energy flows from load to grid (downstream source)
Field Data Verification
As shown in Figure (harmonic power spectrum analysis):
- 5th harmonic (green curve) exhibits consistent negative power characteristics
- 7th harmonic (red curve) demonstrates synchronous negative power patterns
The data conclusively verifies the harmonic distortion originates from the load side, consistent with the physical phenomenon of harmonic energy backflow from equipment to grid after filter disconnection.
